The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Essay Example for Free
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Essay The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year. During four decades, the organization has been the focal point within the United Nations for the integrated treatment of trade and development and related issues in the areas of investment, finance, technology, enterprise development and sustainable development. Established in 1964, UNCTAD promotes the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy. UNCTAD has progressively evolved into an authoritative knowledge-based institution whose work aims to help shape current policy debates and thinking on development, with a particular focus on ensuring that domestic policies and international action are mutually supportive in bringing about sustainable development. The organization works to fulfill this mandate by carrying out three key functions: * It functions as a forum for intergovernmental deliberations, supported by discussions with experts and exchanges of experience, aimed at consensus building. * It undertakes research, policy analysis and data collection for the debates of government representatives and experts. * It provides technical assistance tailored to the specific requirements of developing countries, with special attention to the needs of the least developed countries and of economies in transition. When appropriate, UNCTAD cooperates with other organizations and donor countries in the delivery of technical assistance. The first United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was held in Geneva in 1964. Given the magnitude of the problems at stake and the need to address them, the conference was institutionalized to meet every four years, with intergovernmental bodies meeting between sessions and a permanent secretariat providing the necessary substantive and logistical support. Nowadays UNCTAD has continued to play a crucial role in emphasizing the development dimension of issues in the fields of international trade and investment and related areas. In particular, UNCTAD has been addressing the imbalances of globalization and the need to overcome the supply constraints of developing countries, so as to ensure development gains and poverty reduction. This is captured in the theme of the UNCTAD XI Ministerial Conference, Enhancing coherence between national development strategies and global economic processes towards economic growth and development, particularly of developing countries. Main activities * Trade and commodities: Promotes the diversification of production and trade structures. Helps Governments to formulate and implement diversification policies and encourages enterprises to adapt their business strategies and become more competitive in the world market. * Investment, technology and enterprise development: Helps developing countries to participate more actively in international investment rule making at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels. These arrangements include the organization of capacity-building seminars and regional symposia and the preparation of a series of issues papers. * Macroeconomic policies, debt and development financing: Policy analysis and research on issues concerning global economic interdependence, the international monetary and financial system, and macroeconomic and development policy challenges. * Transport, customs and information technology: Integrated customs system that speeds up customs clearance procedures and helps Governments to reform and modernize their customs procedures and management. Installed in over 80 countries. * Special Programme for Least Developed, Landlocked Developing and Small Island Developing Countries : Identifies the specific needs of these particularly vulnerable countries and tailors technical assistance to these needs. Relationship with other international organizations World Trade Organization UNCTAD and WTO have been joining forces to ensure a better functioning of the multilateral trading system. In April 2003, the organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding providing for cooperation and consultations on their technical assistance activities and for the conduct of joint studies on selected issues. UNCTAD and WTO interact frequently, and the intergovernmental processes in both organizations are often attended by the same Government representatives. International Trade Centre The ITC is jointly sponsored by UNCTAD and WTO for operational, enterprise-oriented aspects of trade development, with an emphasis on trade promotion. In contrast to UNCTAD, whose technical assistance is primarily tailored to Governments, ITCââ¬â¢s technical assistance focuses on assisting businesses in developing countries. Both UNCTAD and WTO are represented in the Joint Advisory Group supervising ITCââ¬â¢s work, and UNCTAD has a number of joint technical assistance activities with ITC.

Bruce Springsteins I Aint Got No Home (In This World Anymore) and the Great Depression The 1930s was the time of The Great Depression, which resulted in drastic changes. There were many people who starved trying to find employment, while many others did what was possible to survive a little longer. Everyone across the United Stated had tough times; especially families who tried to stick together to survive. American families were left out on the streets because they couldnââ¬â¢t pay their debts. Most had no other choice than to split up to find their own ways of surviving. The circumstances inspired many who wrote songs and poems. à à à à à The song ââ¬ËI Aint Got No Home (In This World Anymore)ââ¬â¢ by Bruce Spingsteen was originally written by Woody Guthrie during the times of the Great Depression. This song is about a man who is forced to become a migrant worker. He lost his farm because of the drought that got to his crops. He couldnââ¬â¢t come up with enough money to pay the bankers who showed up at his door. He has six children who are scattered around trying to survive and a wife who died. He is a man who works when he finds work traveling from town to town. à à à à à This song has many references to the conditions of many people during the Great Depression. The narrator is a migrant worker, like many others during that time. He was left with out a home because of the drought that took place during the 1930sââ¬â¢. He finds it amusing how the ones who are gambling are the rich, and the ones...

Draw or print an example of each type and summarize when it is used, what is its maximum transmission distance, and itââ¬â¢s advanta ges and disadvantages. Omni-Directional [pic] When it is used? This antenna can be used for indoor and outdoor access points. It is an excellent solution for RV parks, Marinas, Resort Wi-Fi, and other general outdoor area where other wireless access is needed but unable to be achieved by the small antennas on a router. What is its maximum transmission distance? The range of this antenna is 3000 feet. However, a longer rage is possible with additional antennas on the receiving end. Advantages and disadvantages? The main advantage to this antenna is that you can receive wireless signal in areas that were not available before.Everyone has heard of internet ââ¬Å"Cafesâ⬠, but with this antenna you could make an internet ââ¬Å"Cafeâ⬠literally in the middle of a campground. The disadvantage is that trees, building and hills can reduce the signal and in somecases can completely stop the signal from getting through. Also, to get this antenna high enough to cover some areas the l ength of the coax cable will reduce the signal; thus making the antenna less effective. Semi-Directional [pic] When it is used? Semi-directional antennas are ideally suited for short and medium range bridging. If you want to connect two office buildings that are across the street from one another and need to share a network connection semi-directional would be a good choice. Or if you have a long narrow room where you need coverage throughout the whole room you can mount the antenna on an end wall. This is because the side-to side signal will not travel as far but the forward signal will travel quite far. What is its maximum transmission distance? Semi-directional range can vary greatly but is commonly used in situations that call for a range of a few hundred feet to two miles.Advantages and disadvantages? The main advantage of a semi-directional antenna is that in some cases a semi-directional antenna can provide such a long range coverage that they eliminate the need for multiple a ccess points. The main disadvantage is that if you need coverage over a large open area, such as a cubical office where the entire floor is open, a semi-directional antenna would not be the best choice because not every computer will receive coverage. Highly-Directional [pic] When it is used?Itââ¬â¢s main usage is for point-to-point communication links where wired or other directional wireless coverage is not possible. What is its maximum transmission distance? Highly-directional antennas can operate at a range of up to 35 miles. Advantages and disadvantages? The main advantage is if you need to transmit wireless signal over a very long range without the signal going all over. Such as a person that is quite wealthy, they may have their own private island and want internet connectivity, but does not want to go with satellite internet and wired connectivity is out of the question.Another advantage is that if you are located in a building where wireless signal is very hard to get, a highly-directional signal may be the answer because since it is so focused in such a small narrow margin it may be able to basically blast through the wall. The main disadvantage is that the dish antenna is subject to damage from weather, especially if not mounted correctly. Highly directional antennas, for the most part, require a clear line-of-sight between ends. The Financial Accounting Standards Board - 1900 Words
At the beginning of the 21th century, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) started to realize the importance of fair value accounting as for a new measurement basis for asset and liability. The FASB believed the primary objective of financial reporting is to provide relevant and useful information about the future cash flow to current and prospective investors and creditors (Whittington, 2008). Since the historical cost accounting usually gives information about past transaction, not information about the future, to existing shareholders or creditors, FASB thought financial statements based on historical cost accounting could not be relevant and useful to prospective investors, which makes them difficult to achieve the mainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Brain Wesbury, the Chief Economist at First Trust Advisor L.P, also pointed out that the price of mortgages, corporate bonds, and structured debt have fallen below their fundamental value in uncertain and illiquid market, a nd banks had to write down their asset to this distorted market price in accordance with fair value measurement and record more losses than they had to (Wesbury, 2009). Oher critics make a further argument that this phenomenon has led to the depletion of bankââ¬â¢s regulatory capital and it forced banks to sell off their asset at fire sales prices, which resulted in a contagious downward spiral as fire-sale price from this distressed bank became relevant marks for other banks (Plantin, 2008). Although the contagion effects and asset-fire sales might have been occurred during the financial crisis as critics argue, a careful analysis should be made to find out whether the fair value accounting actually aggravated the severity of the impact of global financial crisis. In fact, according to the research conducted by Laux and Leux (2008), there is little evidence that supports fair-value accounting contributed to the financial crisis. Firstly, most of the financial assets held by bank s in the time of crisis were not marked to market. Under fair value accounting, financial executives in banks have to classify their securities and loans into (maximum) three asset categories: Trading securities, Available for Sales (AFS) securities and
